question mark When is the application deadline?
answer graphic The application is due in November.
question mark Can I save my application and finish/update it later?
answer graphic You can save your application while you are working on it prior to submission. Once you submit it, you will no longer be able to make changes.
question mark How can I verify that my online application has been received?
answer graphic You will receive an online confirmation when your application has been successfully submitted.  Note that your references will not receive a reference letter request until your application is submitted.
question mark Can I submit a paper application?
answer graphic No, we are not equipped to process paper applications.
question mark Can my references submit their letters by mail?
answer graphic All letters of recommendation must be submitted by the reference using the link provided to them. If this poses a problem for your reference, ask them to email us at Letters of reference submitted by the applicant will not be reviewed.
question mark Do I have to be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident in order to be eligible to apply?
answer graphic Yes, our training opportunities are for U.S. citizens and permanent residents only.
question mark How are selections made?
answer graphic Selections for the winter visit are made by a panel of NCI scientists. Internship offers are made by individual investigators following interviews that take place during the visit.
question mark If I am graduating from college this year and will not be continuing my education at this time, can I still apply?
answer graphic Yes, the NCI is a great place to plan the next step in your academic career.
question mark Will my application be reviewed for opportunities at other NIH Institutes or Centers?
answer graphic No, the ICRC program is for the National Cancer Institute only.
question mark How can I get information about specific NCI investigators whom I might contact about the research that they are conducting?
answer graphic Information regarding NCI intramural research programs is available in the Research Areas section of the website.
question mark Is my application secure?
answer graphic Yes, see the privacy statement on the first page of the application.
question mark When will I find out if I am selected?
answer graphic Participants will be notified between late December and early January.
question mark Where will I be working if I am offered an internship?
answer graphic NCI has facilities in Bethesda, Rockville, and Frederick, Maryland.
question mark How many students are selected for the program?
answer graphic Approximately 18 students are selected for the winter visit. Summer and Post-baccalaureate internships will be determined by individual interviews during the winter visit.
question mark Can I update my application from last year?
answer graphic No. You will need to reapply and submit new reference letters.
question mark What are the start and end dates for the program?
answer graphic Start and end dates are mutually agreed upon between you and your investigator. Start dates are recommended between mid-May and early June. The average length of a summer internship is 10 weeks.
question mark Where will I live during my internship?
answer graphic If you participate in the winter visit and if you are offered an internship, you will be responsible for finding your own housing. The program will send you a list of housing resources that will be useful in your search. You will also be provided a 35% subsidy to help defray the cost of your housing. In other words, your monthly stipend will be increased by 35%.
question mark Is this a paid internship?
answer graphic Yes, interns receive a monthly stipend that is based on their education level and experience.
question mark Who should write my letters of recommendation?
answer graphic Letters of recommendation should be written by individuals who have knowledge of your academic and career interests, abilities, accomplishments, and preparedness for scientific research. Select someone who knows you well and can speak specifically on your behalf. Research mentors are recommended as a good starting point. Previous or current professors or employers can also provide letters.
question mark Can I submit more than the required two letters of reference?
answer graphic No, the online application system will only accept two reference letters.
question mark Will I need to submit official transcripts?
answer graphic Official transcripts are expected for previously earned degrees. Official transcripts are preferred; however, unofficial transcripts will be accepted as a placeholder for programs in which you are currently enrolled until official transcripts can be sent. Official transcripts will be required if you are selected for an internship.
